Department of Physics

At the Department of Physics, we investigate the basic phenomena of nature and educate future physicists and physics teachers. The department’s strengths are theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle, nuclear and material physics.

The Department of Physics is known as an inspiring and welcoming place to study and work. Our graduates – physicists, researchers and teachers – find careers in various teaching, research and product development positions. 

The department is the most important research unit in Finland in the fields of particle and nuclear physics, and our Accelerator Laboratory is the largest set of research infrastructure in Finland. Our aim is to understand the origin of elements, shapes and structure of atomic nuclei, the growth of thin films and more. Our research utilizes the four particle accelerators in the Accelerator Laboratory. The Department of Physics is also specialized in studying materials at the nanoscale. Research in this area is carried out at the Nanoscience Center, which is equipped with the latest technology in the field. The department is very international. We collaborate daily with numerous universities and research institutes abroad, such as CERN. The department also hosts the Centre of Excellence on Quark Matter and many activities of the Finnish Quantum Flagship, both funded by the Research Council of Finland.

The Department of Physics carries out active research in areas that will lead to the creation of new technologies.

Research at the Department of Physics

Our research seeks to understand the structure of the universe.

Researchers at the Department of Physics conduct experimental and theoretical basic research as well as applied research, which draws on basic research to produce new technology. Research is divided into material, nuclear and particle physics. In addition, the department has a group for research in teaching. 

Our research is at a leading international level in several fields. The department’s experimental research activities feature extensive expertise in the development and building of research devices. Research cooperation takes place locally, nationally and internationally with both research units and businesses. Moreover, cross-disciplinary collaboration takes place in the department and between the research groups of the faculty.
